Tonight, the Cocoa Tigers compete against the Raines Vikings at Camping World Stadium for the 2017 4A State Championship. Both teams have had great seasons, the Vikings are currently 12-1 and the Tigers are 11-1. MaxPreps has the Vikings ranked 27th and the Tigers ranked 7th out of every team in Florida.  Tonight both teams will show case their talent as they fight for the State Championship. The Tigers last appearance at the State Championship was last year when they defeated Bolles 31-17. The Tigers are looking to go back to back. The playoffs began with sixteen teams, now only two are left.  Both teams have had great seasons but tonight determines it all. As Coach Wilkinson said after the Tigers earned a spot in the State Championship “second place is the first loser”.

This is not the first time the Vikings and Tigers have faced each other. Cocoa defeated Raines 37-28 on Sept.26, 2014. That was just a regular season game, now they are competing against each other for a State Championship.

Javian Hawkins will be returning after seeing limited snaps in the State Semifinal round. Javian was injured in the final game of the regular season with a strained hamstring.  Junior running back, Willie Gaines, has stepped up in the playoffs by rushing for a total of 602 yards and 8 touchdowns in the past three games.

Throughout the playoffs the Tigers shown that not only do they have a unstoppable rushing offense, but they have a great passing offense as well. Senior quarterback, Bradley Cantrell, has thrown for 345 yards and six touchdowns throughout the playoffs. Not only is Cantrell talented at passing, but he’s also mobile, Cantrell rushed for 110 yards and one touchdown in the State Semifinals. Rashean Lynn has led the team in receiving yards throughout the playoffs with 160 yards and two touchdowns. Although, Lynn missed majority of the season due to shoulder injury, he has played a big role for the Tigers offense.

The Tigers defense has been incredible all season long. They’ve had a total of five interceptions and 19.5 sacks. Last season the Tigers allowed 201 points in thirteen games, so far in twelve games they’ve only allowed 122 points. Throughout the playoffs the Tigers have not allowed their opponent to score more than two touchdowns.

The special teams has played a big role for the Tigers.  Junior kicker, Alex Petruzzello, has been efficient all playoffs long. He has not missed a extra point or field goal throughout the playoffs. Petruzzello has made a total of 21 extra points and two field goals in the playoffs. Senior long snapper, Clay James, is a big reason for Petruzzello’s success since he has consistently snapped the ball off perfectly. Freshman backup kicker, Nicholas King, is also perfect throughout the playoffs by making two out of two extra points.

In all three of therenplayoff games the Tigers have been able to build a lead big enough for a running clock. Their are a total of sixteen seniors on the roster. It is sad to see the seniors play their final high school football game, but we hope that they can finish off their high school football careers as State Champions.

The Tigers are the only team in Brevard County to make it to the State Championship this year. Although, both the Tigers and Vikings have dominated throughout the regular season and the playoffs, that is not what matters, what matters is who is the champion and tonight the best team will come out on top to earn the 2017 4A State Championship.
