The Cocoa Tigers traveled all the way to Daytona to face off against the Mainland Buccaneers on a Thursday night. This was a big game for the Tigers. They were coming off of a big 29-22 victory over Glades Central.
The Mainland Buccaneers were on a four game win streak and had a 4-2 record. This game was played at the Daytona Stadium. The Tigers came into this game determined.
The Buccaneers put up the first points on the board off of a 42 yard field goal from Ethan Gettman. The Buccaneers led the Tigers 3-0 with 6:32 remaining in the first quarter.
The Tigers responded to the field goal by the Buccaneers with a 55 yard touchdown from Diego Arroyo to Willie Gaines. Willie dashed past the Buccaneers defense off of a screen play. Nobody could catch that man. The extra point by Alex Petruzzello was good making the score 7-3 with 6:09 remaining in the first quarter.
Allen Pierce stepped up on defense for the Tigers and picked off the Mainland quarterback, Taron Keith. Later on in the first quarter the Tigers added another six to the scoreboard off of a 28-yard missile from Diego Arroyo to Rashean Lynn. Alex Petruzzello made the extra point making the score 14-3 with 3:28 remaining in the first quarter.
The Buccaneers kicker, Ethan Gettman, made a 37 yard field goal with nine seconds remaining in the first quarter to make the score 14-6. The Tigers were on a roll going into the second quarter.
It didn’t take much time for the Tigers to score another touchdown, with 10:10 remaining in the second quarter Diego Arroyo connects to Isaiah Jones for a 45-yard touchdown. One half, three touchdowns for the Sophomore quarterback Diego Arroyo. Alex Petruzzello made the extra point to make the score 21-6,
Montez Black of the Mainland Buccaneers forced Caziah Holmes to fumble and they recovered at the Tigers’ 28-yard line. Later in the second quarter the Buccaneers were able to score their first touchdown of the night off of a 57 yard pick sic from Andrew Plummer. The extra point was good by Ethan Gettman, making the score 21-13 with 3:28 remaining in the first half.
The Tigers responded with a touchdown of their own. Willie Gaines saved the day by recovering a fumble from Caziah Holmes for a 41-yard touchdown. The kick was good by Alex Petruzzello making the score 28-13 with 1:52 remaining in the first half.
The Buccaneers ended the first half with a ten yard passing touchdown from Taron Keith to Andrew Plummer. Ethan Gettman made the extra point. At the end of the first half the Tigers were up 28-20.
Diego Arroyo went 17-21 for 222 yards, 3 touchdowns and one interception. Willie Gaines had 7 catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns (one reception and one fumble recovery).
The Tigers were rejuvenated after the halftime break and ready for a strong second half. The first score of the second half came off of a 35-yard field goal from Alex Petruzzello. The Tigers were up 31-20 with 9:13 remaining in the 3rd quarter.
Neither team was able to score throughout the rest of the third quarter. Going into the 4th quarter the Tigers were up 31-20. Alex Petruzzello made his second field goal of the night from 27-yards out, which made the score 34-20 with 11:52 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Buccaneers were not out of the ball game just yet. The Buccaneers’ quarterback, Taron Keith, scrambled into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown with 10:38 remaining. Ethan Gettman made the extra point to make the score 34-27.
Late in the fourth quarter, Alex Petruzzello made his third and final field goal of the night from 41 yards out. The Tigers remained on top 37-27 with 3:39 left until the game is over.
Jamari Williams said good night to the Mainland Buccaneers by picking off Andrew Plummer. Caziah Holmes scored his first touchdown of the night off of a 13-yard run. Alex Petruzzello made the extra point, making the score 44-27 with 1:49 left.
The Buccaneers were unable to score and the ball game was over. The final score was 44-27. The Tigers offense was lights out against a tough Mainland Buccaneers defense. They had over 500 total net yards.
The Tiger Times Player of the Game was Alex Petruzzello. The senior kicker went 3/3 on field goals and 5/5 on extra points. He was spot on all night long! He broke a school record by scoring the most points by a kicker in a single game with 14.
The Tiger Times Productions Player of the Game was Alex Petruzzello. Alex broke a CHS record for the most points scored in a single game by a kicker with 14. He went 3/3 on FG and 5/5 on XP.
